Difference Between TMD and TMJ

October 25th, 2011

If you have been diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), you have probably noticed that the more research you do about your condition, the more you find the acronyms TMD and TMJ used interchangeably. Many patients wonder what the difference is, or if there is one at all.

Although neuromuscular dentists also use the two terms interchangeably, TMD refers to the actual disorder in which your jaw joint is misaligned. Meanwhile, the joint itself – your temporomandibular joint – is abbreviated TMJ.

The temporomandibular joint itself is a ball-and-socket joint in your jaw. This joint makes it possible to open and close your mouth, or chew, talk, and yawn. When your jaw becomes misaligned from trauma or crooked teeth, these normal tasks can become painful, causing a wide range of symptoms that can affect your entire body.

TMD affects as many as 15% of all Americans. If you are experiencing unexplained jaw popping or clicking, migraines, or pain in your neck and upper back, it’s best to see a Philadelphia neuromuscular dentist to have your condition diagnosed.

If you are suffering from TMD and you live in the Philadelphia area, please contact the office of experienced Philadelphia neuromuscular dentist Dr. Lindsey Marshall to schedule a personal consultation.

Can Braces Cause Neuromuscular Problems?

October 13th, 2011

While most braces are placed on your teeth to eliminate neuromuscular problems, for some patients, orthodontics can actually contribute to more issues. Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a condition caused by a misaligned jaw and an unbalanced bite. If your braces do not fit properly, or if they have not been correctly adjusted, your bite can be thrown out of alignment, leading to TMD as a result.

For example, some wires can cause your teeth to shift backwards, straining your jaw joint. Certain studies have revealed that patients who undergo orthodontic treatment can end up with:

  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Jaw problems

To help avoid these problems, be sure to ask your Philadelphia dentist to take transcranial or tomographic x-rays before orthodontic treatment in order to evaluate the correct position of your joints. These x-rays will also act as a blueprint to help establish a harmonious relationship between your teeth, muscles, nerves, and joints.

If you live in Philadelphia, Main Line, or Ardmore, Pennsylvania and think your braces may be casing TMD, please contact the office of experienced Philadelphia Neuromuscular Dentist Dr. Lindsey Marshall to schedule an initial consultation. We can help you alleviate your painful symptoms.

Neuromuscular Dentistry

September 27th, 2011

Neuromuscular dentistry focuses on the muscles that move your jaw. When you bite down, your teeth fit together like a puzzle. Your unique bite forces your muscles and jaw into a certain position, which may not be its natural resting position.

If your jaw joint is misaligned, both the hard and soft tissues are affected and a number of other problems may result, such as:

  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Clicking or popping in your jaw joint

In a many of these cases, these symptoms are the result of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).

Your Ardmore neuromuscular dentist works to realign your bite and resolve TMD symptoms. Their job is to find your jaw’s optimal position and take the necessary measures to ensure that your teeth fit together properly, without straining your muscles. Neuromuscular dentists understand the necessity for including the power source (muscles) and the controls (nerves) which create the movement of your teeth and the functionality of your mouth.

Do you live in Philadelphia, Main Line, or Ardmore, Pennsylvania and believe you may be suffering from TMD? Please contact the office of Philadelphia Neuromuscular Dentist, Dr. Lindsey Marshall and come in for a diagnosis as soon as possible.

Dentist Tooth Whitening vs. Over the Counter

September 26th, 2011

Tooth whitening is a simple, painless procedure that can brighten your smile and enhance your self-confidence.

Dentist Tooth Whitening

In-office tooth whitening is the longest-lasting, most efficient way to lighten your smile. This Philadelphia teeth whitening procedure uses a highly-concentrated hydrogen peroxide gel that can brighten your smile up to 16 shades. This cost for this procedure averages $1,000 to $1,500, but the results are often permanent with the occasional touch-up needed every several months or so.

Over-The-Counter Tooth Whitening

If you are looking to brighten your teeth a shade or two, over-the-counter bleaching trays may work for you. They can be bought at your local pharmacy, and average about $40 and $80. These whitening trays use a glycerin-based peroxide gel as opposed to the more effective hydrogen peroxide gel.

Whitening strips are thin, clear strips that are coated with a peroxide-based whitening gel. The strips cost about $25 and must be applied twice a day for 30 minutes for at least two weeks. The results are not as uniform as other tooth-whitening procedures, but the results can last up to four months.

If you live in the area of Philadelphia, Main Line, or Ardmore, Pennsylvania and want to whiten your smile, please contact the office of Philadelphia Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Lindsey Marshall to set up a consultation.

What is Gum Recontouring?

September 23rd, 2011

Even if you have straight, healthy teeth, your smile may suffer aesthetically if you have excessive gum tissue. If your gum tissue covers too much of your tooth, it can make your teeth appear small and create the appearance of a “gummy smile.” Philadelphia cosmetic dentistry can help restore your self-confidence with gum recontouring.

The Gum Recontouring Procedure

Today’s cosmetic dentistry utilizes a dental laser to reduce excessive gum tissue and attractively contour your gums. Your gum line should appear even and smooth, and work to frame your face instead of causing a distraction. If your gums are uneven and it makes your teeth appear crooked, this quirk can also be fixed with gum recontouring.

A scalpel was once used for this procedure, which caused bleeding and a risk of infection. The modern dental laser is safe, effective and can be completed in a single pain-free visit. Patients who undergo this treatment may experience some tenderness and swollen gums for several days after the procedure, but this should quickly subside.

If you live in the area of Philadelphia, Main Line, or Ardmore, Pennsylvania and are looking to enhance your smile with gum recontouring, please contact the office of Philadelphia Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Lindsey Marshall to arrange your smile analysis today.

What is Laser Dentistry?

September 22nd, 2011

  • Filling teeth: Dental lasers can remove bacteria and decay more effectively and thoroughly than hand-held tools.
  • Gum recontouring: Lasers are used to reshape your gum line and can eliminate excessive gum tissue to create a more attractive, healthy smile.
  • Preventing tooth sensitivity: Dental lasers can seal the tubules that decreases and even eliminate sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Teeth whitening: Lasers are used to activate the whitening gel used in tooth whitening procedures.
  • Folds in your soft tissue: If you have folds in your soft tissue, instead of having sutures placed, a dental laser can correct these folds (oftencreated by ill-fitting dentures).

What is Painless Dentistry?

September 21st, 2011

At the office of Philadelphia cosmetic dentist Lindsey Marshall, we offer the latest in dental technology to help ensure comfortable, safe procedures for all of our patients. Pain is one of the most common concerns surrounding any dental visit. By utilizing state-of-the-art cosmetic dental techniques, Dr. Marshall is able to offer painless procedures with stunning results.

Taking the Pain out of Dentistry

Dentists have offered anesthesia for many procedures for a number of years. Traditionally, anesthesia has ben delivered in the form of a shot or gas. While this method provided some comfort, it was difficult to control the amount of medicine used, and still required a painful shot for application.

One of the most exciting advancements in dental technology is the Wand. The Wand is a needle-free anesthetic delivery system that provides sufficient medication without the need for a shot. We are pleased to offer this system to our patients, reducing both the discomfort associated with some dental procedures, and the pain that can be caused by traditional forms of anesthetic delivery.

Combined with other advancements including soft tissue lasers and air abrasion, the Wand can make your visit to our office more comfortable than you have ever imagined visiting a dentist could be.

If you live in or around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and would like more information about our technology and commitment to painless dentistry, please contact experienced cosmetic dentist Lindsey Marshall, DMD to schedule an initial consultation today.

Types of Dental Implants

September 21st, 2011

Dental implants offer the only permanent solution for missing teeth. Unlike dentures and dental bridges, dental implants are secured into your jawbone to act as artificial tooth roots. Due to this, dental implants provide enhanced function and structural support for surrounding teeth, tissue, and bones. Once available only to those who had sufficient bone density, there is now a dental implant solution for nearly everyone.

Types of Dental Implants

At the Philadelphia office of cosmetic dentist Lindsey Marshall, we offer three types of dental implants:

  • Root form implants – Used in wide, deep bone, these implants most closely resemble your natural tooth roots
  • Plate form implants – Better for use in narrow jawbones, these implants are an excellent alternative for patients with insufficient bone structure who are not ideal candidates for bone grafting
  • Subperiosteal implants– Ideal for jawbones that lack both height and width, these implants are placed under the gum line, just above the bone

When you come to our office for a dental implant consultation, Dr. Marshall will carefully evaluate the structure of your jaw to determine which solution is best for your unique smile.

If you live in or around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and are interested in learning more about dental implants, please contact the knowledgeable staff at Lindsey Marshall, DMD to schedule an initial consultation today.
